Lab 3 Flashcards

1
Q

what are the limitations of the lead acetate in this experiment? how can it be used?

A

lead acetate test will only produce positives for amino acids that contain sulfur (such as cysteine), so if the protein did not contain sulfur, it will be false negative. this test can be used to specifically test for the presence of cystein and methionine, and if there are disulfide bridges in the protein.

Q

process that promotes maximum interactions between hydrophilic lipase enzymes and their substrace, hydrophobic lipid molecules

A

the liver secretes bile into the small intestine, which will break down the fat droplets into smaller particles. the bile salts are ampiphatic, and the hydrophobic region will associate with the surface of the lipid molecule, while the hydrophilic region will associate with the water. colipase will work with lipase to break down the fat into monoglycerides. the hydrophobic surface of colipase will allow for lipase activity.

Q
where is each of the following enzymes synthesized in the body, and where does it function?
pepsin
chymotrypsin
lipase
aminopeptidase
maltase
A

pepsin - stomach, functions stomach
chymotrypsin - pancreas, functions duodenum
lipase - pancreas + mouth + stomach, functions in pancreas + stomach, +mouth, and in many enothelial cells
aminopeptidase - small intestine, functions in small intestine
maltase - small intenstine, functions small intestine

Q

how are the inner linings of the stomach and intestine protexted from damage by digestive enzymes

A

stomach is lined with mucus secreted by the epethelial cells which protect it from digesting itself

Q

why does the hydrolysis of starch by amylase produce maltotriose molecules?

A

it hydrolyzes it cause its not specific and hydrolyzes everyother alpha 1-4 bond, hence can skip a bond creating maltriose
