Lab 2: Standard Resting ECGs Flashcards
What is the importance of standardization of ECGs?
Minimizes any differences b/t technicians and locations –> physicians can compare changes in the same individual over time and find the same diagnosis regardless of who performed the ECG
What is the gold standard of ECGs?
12 lead ECG
What does the 12-lead ECG consist of?
- 4 limb electrodes
- 6 precordial electrodes
What do the electrodes do?
Measure voltage changes that occur b/t 2 pts and report these as either (+) or (-) and moving either towards or away from a particular pt
What is a lead? What does it represent
Recording of voltage changes by the electrodes that represent diff views or perspectives of the heart
What is a rhythm strip?
One or more leads recorded over a period of time (usually 10 secs)
Where are the limb electrodes placed?
Anterior surface of both wrists and ankles
Where are the precordial electrodes placed?
- V1 – Right 4th intercostal space adjacent to sternum
- V2 – Left 4th intercostal space adjacent to sternum
- V3 – Between V2 and V4
- V4 – Left 5th intercostal space at mid-clavicular line
- V5 – Level with V4 at anterior-axillary line
- V6 – Level with V4 at mid-axillary line
What are all ECGs labeled with?
- Name
- Age
- Sex
- Height
- Weight
- Date and time
- Position and lead placement
- HR
- BP (L and R)
- Oral temp
- Meds
- Drug allergies
