Lab 1 - Solute; Gradients Flashcards
Solute
A substance that is dissolved
Gradient
When more of something exists in one area than another area
Diffusion
The movement of solute from an area of high concentration to a low concentration. (passive)
Osmosis
The movement of a solvent from a low solute concentration to a high solute concentration through a semipermeable membrane.
Osmotic Pressure
It is created by the difference in solute concentrations on either side of the membrane. The higher the solute concentration the higher the OP.
Hydrostatic Pressure
The force that a fluid pushes on the walls of its container.
Filtration
The movement of fluid and solutes through a selectively permeable membrane using a force such as HP and/or oxygen.
