Chapter 1 - Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
The relatively constant internal environment the body needs to function properly inside and out.
Normal Range
The normal value (set point) for a body function.
Feedback Loop
The response to fix a stimulus that disrupted homeostasis
Positive Feedback Loop
Reinforces the original stimuli due to it being the fastest response
Negative Feedback Loop
Does the opposite of the stimuli, is more common
Components of a feedback loop
Stimulus
Receptor/Sensor
Control Center
Effector
Principle of Complementarity of Structure and Function
However, the way that something is formed relates to its function
Gradients
More of something exists in one area than another, in between the areas they are connected.
Concentration Gradient
Pressure Gradient
Cell-Cell Communication
Cells need to communicate via chemicals (hormones, neurotransmitters) or due to charged ion/particles
