Chapter 4 - Triglycerides Flashcards
Triglycerides at room temperature
Fats when solid; Oils when liquid
Beta - Oxidation
A process that catabolizes and oxidizes produces large amounts of ATP
Adipose Functions
Protect organs
Regulate Body Temperature
Energy Storage
(intake > need)
Extra triglyceride becomes adipose tissue
Building Blocks
3 Fatty acids (may vary) and Glycerol
Formed by:
Dehydration Synthesis
Structure of fatty acids
A straight chain hydrocarbon with carboxyl at one end.
What determines type of structure
Can be short or long ; single or double covalent bonds between C determine how solid in room temp.
Saturated Fatty Acids
Single Covalent Bond with C (forming a solid)
Unsaturated Fatty Acids
One or more double covalent bond (Forming a liquid bend)
Monounsaturated Fatty Acids
One double covalent bond
Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids
Two or more double covalent bonds
Trans Fats
Solidified by addition of H atoms at C double cond site.
