Lab 1 BIO 307 Flashcards
Biuret test results for what? And what color(s) means protein is present? And what was it positive in?
Protein
1)Purple when protein is present.
2)Pink color= shorter polypeptides are present.
2)Egg albumin
Benedict’s test results for what? And what color means that sugar is present? And what was it positive in?
most sugars (monosaccharides)
1)Green, yellow, orange, or red
2)glucose solution
Iodine results for what? And what color change indicated that starch is present? And what was it positive in?
Starch
1)Black or dark blue
2)starch solution
Sudan IV dye test for what? And what color indicates it is positive? And what was it positive in?
Lipids
1)Yellow with red specks
2) Oil
Is the pH values the same for distilled water and tap water? if not, why?
No, the pH of distilled water is actually slightly acidic compared to tap water.
A persons blood pH of 7.20 is considered acidosis, even though this pH is above 7 on the pH scale. Explain why?
It’s considered acidosis because since it’s above seven there’s more H+ and less OH-
Basic solution(alkaline)
a basic solution has very little H+ will have more OH–.
As a solution gets more basic (higher [OH-]), the pH increases.
As the pH of a solution decreases the concentration of H+ increases. As the pH of a solution increases, the concentration of OH- increases.
When the pH is more acidic what concentration increases?
H+ concentration increases.
When the pH is more basic(alkaline) what concentration increases?
OH- concentration increases.
What color does the pH paper turn for acids?
Red color, hot-pink color
Color of neutral is what
Purple color
Color of pH paper for base(alkaline)?
Green
H+
Hydrogen ions
OH-
Hydroxide ions
