La de Landscpaes Flashcards
Dry Valleys
During the ice age, permafrost covered the periglacial environment and precipitation was unable to infiltrate. The rivers eroded v shaped valleys and after the ice age, water infiltrates the chalk leaving dry valleys.
Exposure
- The top of the anticline has been eroded away - exposing domes at the sides ( Chilterns/ North + South Downs )
- Dip ( gentle ) slope towards London
- Scarp ( steeper ) into the clay Vale
Formation
Southern Uk was ex-periglacial permafrost, but as the Ice age ended it has melted. 3 different lands collided which has folded layers of sedimentary rock ( tectonics ).
Human activity
To get water, lots of spring line settlements are made. There are pathways through valleys, which people can walk through. Markets bare based in towns for clay/flint/wood
Hydrology
Chalk - can be infiltrated by water, permeable, porous
Clay - is not infiltrated by water, impermeable, non-porous. Chalk is on top of clay, so when the water reaches the clay it is forced back up to the surface ( resurgence )
Sedimentary rocks Characteristics and types
these are made up of small particles of sand and rock, which have been transported by the wind, rivers and ice and are usually deposited on lake or seabed. Over many millions of years, successive layers of sediments accumulate. These layers of sediments are compressed by the weight of the deposits above, into sedimentary rocks.
