L9 Membranes Flashcards
Exam 2!
What is the function of the membrane?
Selectively permeable barrier.
What are the qualities of the membrane?
- Self healing
- Cell communication
- Molecule/ion import/export
- Cell growth/Flexible
- Fluid
What are membranes made of?
Lipids and embedded proteins.
Building block of lipids
Fatty acids
What quality of fatty acids leads to bilayer formation?
Amphipathic
What is fluidity?
The ease of movement of lipids within the plane of the bilayer.
Why is fluidity important?
- Proteins need to interact
- Molecules need to move from sites of insertion.
- Membranes need to fuse
- Membranes need to grow and pinch off.
What does it mean if a membrane is assymmetric?
The lipid composition of one side is different.
What can impact membrane fluidity?
- Temperature
- Cholesterol
- Plasma-membrane deformation
What does cholesterol do?
Its short and stiff structure fills the gaps between hydrophobic heads of phospholipids. Stiffens the bilayer!
What two qualities of fatty acids determine membrane fluidity?
Length (shorter = more fluid)
Saturation (more kinks=more space)
Cell cortex function:
Reinforces plasma membrane structure/shape.
What is the Glycocalyx?
The carbohydrate outer coating of the bilayer.
Function of glycocalyx?
- Protect
- Lubricate
- Recognition
- Adhesion
Glycocalyx made of?
Oligosaccharides and polysaccharides
