L9 - community ecology Flashcards
Are reintroduced species invasive?
no, but they can still become a problem of populations go out of contorl
What is a biological community?
consists of all the species that occupy a given place and the interactions among those species.
what does research on communities typically focus on
a specific taxonomy within that community, eg. plants, birds, etc
what is a guild
species that use the same resources within a community
what is a functional group
species that process resources in a similar way
what is a trophic level
food chain level, eg, herbivores, carnivores, detritivores.
What is the organismic view as described by Clements, Frederick E.
- communities are discrete and distinct entities
- species in association have evolved together and are integrated into tight linkages.
What is the individualistic view as described by Gleason, Henry Allen
individuals have their own environmental tolerances and the communities that evolve around them are a result of chance historical events.
what is incorrect about both Clements, and Gleasons views of community ecology
both are extreme, and oversimplify species interaction. in reality a contemporary view fuses them together.
how do we characterize communities?
alpha diversity
what is a problem with using alpha diversity as to characterize communities
does not consider relative abundance
Define symbiosis
Close, long-term relationship between two organisms
what are three types if symbiosis
- mutualism (+,+)
- parasitism (+,-)
- commensalism (+,Neutral)
can be obligate or facultative
Describe Mutualism
interaction between species where both benefit.
describe parasitism
interaction between species where one benefits, while the other species is negatively impacted
- parasite, and host
- eg. MPB
