L3 - Biodiversity Flashcards
define Biodiversity
sum total of variation of life on earth.
what are the three components of diversity?
genetic, species, ecosystem diversity
describe genetic diversity
individuals differ genetically within populations of a species
why is genetic diversity important?
more genetic diversity allows for higher chance to succeed in a changing environment.
what is species fitness?
how likely a species is to succeed
what does agrobiodiversity, and why is it bad.
refers to monoculture crops that have low genetic diversity and have low fitness within the given population.
what are the three types of species diversity?
alpha, beta, and gamma diversity
what is alpha diversity
number of species ina given area (usually small homogenous)
what is gamma diveristy
species richness over larger area (region- continent scale)
what is beta diversity
the difference in species among habitats or communities
what are the two ways of calculating beta diversity?
Whittaker method and turnover method
what is the equation for Whittaker beta diversity
betaW = gamma / alpha.mean
what is the equation for turnover beta diversity
betaT = (alpha1 - overlap1&2) + (alpha2 - overlap1$2)
how many mass extinctions are there in geological history?
5 - currently in 6th
what are the current causes of the mass extinction going on right now (5)
- habitat destruction
- introduction of species
- overexploitation
- climate change
- nitrogen deposition
