L6 - quantitative ecology & descriptive statistics Flashcards
what is descriptive statistics?
finds ways to summarize data
includes:
- central tendency
- range
- symmetry
what is inferential statistics?
what does the data tell us? what inferences on the data that has been collected.
what are the three measures of central tendency?
mean, median , mode
If data is symmetrical it is________ ________
Normally distributed
what are the two types of error
- systematic
- random
what is spread (range) in a data set
the difference between the highest and lowest values. high spread = high difference
what are the three measures of spread
IQR, variance, Standard deviation
what does a robust dataset describe?
it behaves as expected for any data set
- reliable, tough, strong, confident
what does a resistant dataset describe?
one or two outliers wont change the value of the statistics too significantly.
