L7.1 - Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
Musculoskeletal system
The system of organs and tissues that protect, move, and define the shape of the human body
Muscle
Contractile and connective tissues grouped into coordinated systems for efficiency with the primary functions of movement, maintaining shape and posture, and energy storage
Myocyte
AKA muscle fiber or muscle cell, cells that contain fibers of contractile proteins and build muscle tissue
Myofibril
A long contractile fiber that runs the length of the cell
Myosin
The contractile protein that makes the thick fibers within myofibrils
Actin
The contractile protein that makes the thin fibers within myofibrils
Sarcomere
The functional contractile unit of muscle consisting of overlapping bands of myosin and actin
Z-line
The zig-zagged anchor point consisting mostly of actin - forms the end points of each sarcomeres
M-line
The mid-line of the sarcomere and anchor for the myosin filaments
Smooth muscle
Muscle tissue consisting of myocytes that do not possess a discernable system of sarcomeres
Skeletal muscle
AKA striated or voluntary muscle, muscle tissue consisting of myocytes that possess a system of densely packed, highly organized sarcomeres, thus the banded appearance
Cardiac muscle
Muscle consisting of myocytes that are similar in size and shape to smooth muscle myocytes but also possess that organized sarcomeres and banding of skeletal
