L5-Pulmonary System Flashcards
Gas laws
The principles in chemistry an d physics that state how gasses behavve when environmental varibles are changed
Diffusion
The physical process whereby material is transported from a location of high concentration to a location of low concentration
Trachea
A partially flexible, cartilaginous tube connecting the throat to the lungs
Bronchi
The first two major branches that split from the bottom of the trachea
Bronchioles
The branching and increasingly smaller and smaller air passages that branch off from each bronchus inside the lungs
Lungs
A pair of spongy organs on either side of the heart consisting of thousands of air passages and alveoli
Bronchitis
Inflammation (swelling/irritation) of the bronchiole tubes - causes persistent coughing, breathing difficulties, and fatigue
Diaphragm
Flat, dome-shaped muscle attached to the bottom of the ribs and sternum that is a barrier between the abdominal and thoracic cavities and is the primary muscle that controls breathing
Ribs
The bones and cartilage that form the ribcage that support the diaphragm and other muscles involved in breathing
Intercostal muscles
The muscles in between the ribs
Alveoli
Clusters of air sacs where gasses are exchanged between the blood and the air
Nose hair
Hair produced from follicles growing in the front of the nostrils that serve as a built-in filter for larger particles
Mucus membrane
Layer of tissue lining the respiratory and digestive tracts, consists of ciliated cells that produce mucus
Mucus
Water fluid that varies in viscosity depending on the mixture of dissolved proteins, sugars, and immune molecules that serves a protective function
