L6 - Digestive System Flashcards
Digestive system
The system of organs and tissues adapted for the breakdown and absorption of nutrients into the human body
Mechanical digestion
Physical breakdown of food material into smaller pieces
Chemical digestion
Breakdown of food materials into their chemical constituents using digestive secretions
Buccal cavity
AKA the mouth or oral cavity, an opening at the top of the respiratory and digestive systems supported by the muscles & bones of the skull containing the teeth, tongue, and salivary glands
Teeth
Hard resistant structures occuring on the jaws and in the mouth used for masticating (chewing)
Tongue
Muscular organ in the mouth involved in licking, tasting, breathing, swallowing and speaking
Salivary glands
Glandular organs located within the walls of the mouth that secrete saliva
Saliva
AKA spit, a watery fluid secreted within the mouth that moistens and lubricates chewed food, and contains both digestive and immune enzymes
Esophagus
Flexible, muscular tube extending between the throat and the top of the stomach
Peristalsis
The rhythmic alternating contraction and relaxation of circular and longitudinal muscle bands ina long the entire digestive tract that advances materials from swallowing to excretion
Stomach
A muscular pouch primarily used for temporary food strorage and to mix food materials with various gastric juices
Small intestine
Longest organ of the digestive system (5.5 m long) and the primary organ for both chemical digestion and nutrient absorption
Liver
Largest internal organ, a multifunctional organ that secretes several digestive enzymmes that are secreted into the small intestine, including bile
Bile
Fluid secreted by the liver that aids in the digestive enzyme for lipids and as an emulsifier that aids in the absorption of lipids
Gall Bladder
Pouch-like organ that stores bile before it is secreted into the small intestine
