domestic violence
pattern of abusive beh in any relations thts used by one person to gain/maintain control over another persons (spouses, couples, parents + children)
Types of abuse
Phy - hitting, biting, slapping etc (denying med, treatm, focing drug use)
Sexual- (cohercing into sex contact/beh without consent
Eco- makes victim $ reliant
psych- envoking fear via intimidation/isolation
stalking-following the victim (watching/harrasing)
emo- intimidating victims sense of self worth/esteem
risk factors
circumstances tht play an imp role in search for domestic violence cases/causes
-likelihood and severity of future violence (and likely outcomes of interventions)
-some might not be direct; not everyone at risk is involved (societal, individ, relational and community based)
help
-can take time for survivors to adj to safe environm
-counselling, therapy, individ interventions (ie advocal, uniform, guide and help…gain access to services)
-skill building, short or long duration group approaches
Battered woman syndrome (BWS)
-psyc condition (recogn by many courts) as a result of serious long term abuse
-learned helplessn (victim becomes depressed and deflected and passive..believes she cant leave without drastic measures….flight or fight)
-abuser is omnipresent

risk assessm tools are based on a no of psych and psychosocial factors with reactivism
-static (fixed and unchangeable)
-dynamic (factors that can change)
-CTS (conflict tactics scale; intrafam conflict, 80 items) (how parent reacts in conflict with kid; restricted to conflict violence and underestimates the rest; context ignored)
-DVSI (domestic violence screening incitory; 12 item)
-DA (danger assessm; predict)
-SARA (spousal assault risk assessm guide; 15 countries, predict intimate partner violence and lethality)
-VRAG (violence risk appraisal guide; predict recidivism)
*not alll kids act the same are are affected the same (depends on age, experience, prior trauma, temperment, proximity to violence and quality of relationship; there are short and long term effects)
