L3 Deception Detection Flashcards
Modern Methods
Sometimes hard to detect deception (even witn lie)
electronic (polygraph, vsa), neurological (brain fingerprinting/mapping) extreme (chem/torture), communication
(dif to trials and such; ie rice (spit out n rice stays on tongue, dry mouth - guilt) water (drown - guilt) from ancient times)
Communication
Actual words used, paralang (can be used to subtly change statem meaning; tone, volume, pace), body lang
Non verbal communication
eye contact, posture, hand gestures, facial expressions
Micro expressions
brief, involuntary facial e shown according to emo experienced
Body language
- consquences of getting caught, beh baselines, spontaneous beh, lies are complex (not even they believe it
-attempts to delay and conceal, changes from norm, incr arousal (ie higher pitch), signs of unclear thinking, attempt to cont nonv beh, expressions dont correlate
-sell themselves/be honest
-distract (ie disparaging/few act statements)
Polygraph test
Lie detector
-Polygrapher makes beh observations (unclear together for actual observations; not valid in barbados)
-painless, effective in investigation, allowed for some court cases, long history of use, military used
-subj to false +/=, lengthy (stay still for long time attached to many things), subjective interpreter
-machenzi made first polyg, marston credited invention of primative lie detection form, larson built ‘orginal’ lie d., keeler patented modern poly protoype, father 1939
Frye Standard
-1923
-james appealed, confessed then retracted (court rejected poly valdity)
-must be considered techn sound by experts
Voice stress analysis
tech tht aims to deduce deception from stress measured in voice
-invented 1970
-computerized 1988 (humble)
-computer voice stress analyzer (psychophysio changes in response to direct ?, change in voice freq (involuntary muscles), more accurate than polygraph and in a more relaxed environment, examiners are well versed on investigative techn
Statement validity assessment (criteria based content analysis)
-1963
-determine credibility of child witness (hard otherwise without phy evidence or its only victim and abuser)
-quality of account of self experiene event (may be dif to what actually happened
-use interview info
-Case file analysis, semi struct interview (ie prompts (mm), open ended ?)
