L5 Feeding Flashcards
what is a cecum
structure found at the start of the large intestine
What type of gut do rabbits and rodents (specifically squirrels) have?
Simple stomach and large cecum
What type of gut do ruminants have?
4 chambered stomach with large rumen with long small and large intestines
What is the rumen?
where cellulose is digested
Why do ruminants have a 4 chambered stomach?
The food is processed twice. it goes back up to the abomassum from the stomach to be digested again.
What are the 4 chambers of the ruminant stomach
rumen, abomassum,omassum,reticulum
What type of gut does an insectivore have?
Short intestine, no cecum
What type of gut does a carnivore have? why?
Short intestine and colon, small cecum - meat is more nutritionally dense than plants so is quicker to digest
Insectivory is represented at least in 12 orders. name them. go on .do it. all twelve.
Monotremata – Notoryctemorphia – Dasyuromorphia – Afrosoricida – Erinaceomorpha – Soricomorpha – Chiroptera – Cingulata & Pilosa – Pholidota – Tubulidentata – (Carnivora - secondary specialisation of feeding insects - can be a carnivorous insectivore).
What are insectivores teeth coated with?
Chitin
What is Myrmecophagy?
Specialisation - Ant/termite eating.
Wht type of dentition do you see in insectivory?
reduction in teeth, protusile tounge (+digging limbs)
Give an example of a Myrmecophegic marsupial?
Numbat.
Give an example of a carnivorous ‘anteater’
Aardwolf & bat-eared fox –> both have reduced dentition
What is fossorial insectivory
Insect eaters which live under ground
Give an example of a fossorial insectivore
Golden mole, marsupial mole, star nosed mole (Notoryctemorphia, afrosorcida and soricomorphia)
Give an example of an arboreal insectivore
Aye Aye and Tarsier
which mammal has the widest variation in feeding across species?
Bats
What are 2 examples of mammals are nectivorous
bats and honey possums
what are Sanguinivorous mammals?
blood feeding mammals
