L5 - A Theory of Associative Learning Flashcards
What do we know about causal relationships?
Cause precedes effect
What are the different types of conditioning?
Delay conditioning - US straight after the tone
Trace conditioning - US after the tone with slight delay
Simultaneous conditioning - US and tone presented at the same time
Backwards conditioning - US before the tone
Is correlation important for associative learning 1968?
Rescorla three groups of rats
1 - tone and shock
2 - tone and extra shocks
3 - shock never paired with tone
Positive tone positively correlated with shock
Zero tone uncorrelated with shock
Negative tone negatively correlated
How does surprise playa role in associations?
Pairings only produce learning when the US is surprising
Why don’t warning signals extinguish?
In avoidance learning, avoidance responses persist even though warning signals haven’t been paired with shock for ages
They are conditioned inhibitors predicting the absence of the shock
