all must be fulfilled at the same time to be classified as normal
what are the 6 criteria
Autonomy - independent of social influences, makes own decisions
Perception of reality - not too optimistic/pessimistic, signs of empathy and social sensitivity
Personal growth - becoming the type of person that you aim to be
Integration - able to cope well with stressful/anxiety-provoking situations
Environmental mastery - ability to love, adequacy at work and play, good relations and efficient problem solving
Self attitudes - high self esteem and strong sense of identity
strength of deviation from ideal mental health
positive and productive
focuses on ideal criteria we should all aim for
seen as therapeutic goal
self actualisation is positive trait which all should try to accomplish
2 weaknesses of deviation from ideal mental health
- problematic as based on abstract concepts and ideals, difficult to define and measure, e.g. how much environmental mastery needed to be judged as normal, not objective or scientific
- very few achieve all criteria at one time, unrealistic, e.g. few experience personal growth all the time so most are abnormal, may be ideals rather than actualities
