behaviour that does not follow accepted social patterns
violation of these patterns would be regarded as abnormal and classified as unacceptable

- does not always clearly indicate someone has a psychological abnormality, may just be eccentric, must be cautious when making judgements on someone’s behaviour
- context should be taken into account, e.g. not wearing clothes in high street vs not wearing clothes on nudist beach, can be acceptable in different contexts
