compulsive behaviours - repetitive and unconcealed, must do actions or something dreadful might happen creating anxiety
hinder everyday functioning
social impairment - unable to conduct meaningful interpersonal relationships

avoidance - avoid situations which may trigger anxiety

3 emotional characteristics of OCD

A

anxiety and distress - aware that behaviour is excessive, creates feelings of shame but cannot control behaviours leading to distress
accompanying depression - anxiety may have low mood and lack of enjoyment of activities
guilt and disgust - irrational guilt over minor issues, disgust directed at external things

4 cognitive characteristics of OCD

A

obsessions - intrusive thoughts/impulses perceived as forbidden, may be frightening or embarrassing, thoughts impulses and images are uncontrollable and cause anxiety
recognised as self generated
realisation of inappropriateness
attention bias - pay more attention to anxiety creating stimuli, hyper vigilant and look for things that will justify high anxiety levels
