L3.5 Bacterial Pathogenesis Flashcards
What are Kochs postulates?
- Organism found in all patients with disease
- Distribution corresponds to lesions
- Cultivate outside host for several generations
- Reproduce the disease in other species
- Demonstrate a specific immune response
What bacteria have LPS?
Gram negative
Whats the difference between commensals and pathogens?
Commensals protect the body and pathogens endanger the body.
Commensals dont adhere tightly to cells and are usually in the mucous and pathogens adhere tightly and specifically
What is the difference between active and passive immunity?
Passive immunity is when the antibodies are given directly to the individual and active is when a vaccine is administered so that the body will make antibodies
What are the features of K88 and what did K88 and the vaccine do in pigs?
K88: protein, fimbrial antigen
If piglets were given K88 they could be immune to tetanus
How does tetanus occur?
Caused by clostridium tetani because spores get into umbilical stump. Spores get into dead tissue of umbilical cord, produce toxins. Vaccine for tetanus is DPT - immunise mother - IgG antibodies cross placenta and baby is immune to clostridium tetani.
