L31_Virus Life Cycle Flashcards
Are viruses visible by light microscopy?
No
Do viruses contain genes encoding for lipid and protein synthesis machinery?
NO, they use the host cell machinery
What are the 9 steps of Virus life cycle?
1 Recognition 2 Attachment 3 Entry: Penetration or Fusion 4 Uncoating 5 Transcription of mRNA 6 Protein Synthesis 7 Replication of genome 8 Assembly of Virions 9 Egress: lysis, budding, exocytosis
What does tissue tropism refer to?
The preferred tissue type of a virus
What is the difference between a susceptible cell and a permissive cell.
Susceptible refers to cells that express the correct receptors such that Viruses can bind and enter
Permissive refers to cells that support virus replication once inside the cell.
What is a requirement for a virus to enter via fusion?
It needs to be enveloped
What marks the beginning of the eclipse phase?
The un-coating of the virus. The particle is non infectious at this point and is not detectible
Compare viral mRNA to our mRNA
Extremely similar structure included similar untranslated region because they use out ribosomes
What do most antiviral drugs target?
The genome replication.
At what point do capsid proteins get synthesized?
Lat on in the infection.
What marks the end of the eclipse phase?
Capsid assembly
Instead of counting colonies like with bacteria, when quantifying viruses you count?
Plaques.
