L3: Self-Report Techniques Flashcards
What are Self Report Techniques?
Participants give info about themselves W/out researcher interference
What is a structured interview?
- All participants are asked the same questions in the same order
- Provides quantitative results
- Consists of closed q
Adv and Disadv of Structured Interviews
(+) Misunderstandings can be cleared
(+) Quick
(-) Risk of interviewer effects = invalidity
(-) Lack of qualitative data, so results can be invalid and might not measure key variables
What is a unstructured interview?
- Informal in-depth conversation
- Questions are not preplanned but have common themes
- Provides qualitative data
Adv and Disadv of Unstructured Interviews
(+)useful W/sensitive topics, allows for probing of info
(+) gains rich&detailed data high in validity
(-) invalid because of social desirability
(-) interviewers need to be well trained to gain relevant data. Can be time consuming & expensive
What is a Semi-structured interview?
- Combines structured & unstructured interviews and collects qualitative and quantitative data
- Has open and closed questions that are preplanned and not.
Adv and Disadv of Semi-structured Interviews
(+) Provides both quantitative + qualitative data
(+) answers are high in validity & reliability
(-) Answers with Key themes can be irrelevant
(-) Responses can be hard to analyse
(-) participants may lie to be more socially desirable
What things should you consider when you design a questionnaire?
- Type of data: open or closed
- Ambiguity
- Double-Barrelled Questions
- Leading Questions
- Complexity
Adv and Disadv of Questionnaires?
(+) Quick, easy, cheap, large sample
(+) Time efficient, researcher doesn’t have to be present
(+) easy to replicate, so reliable
(-) Ambiguous q = invalid results
(-) Low response rate
(-) Biased sample as only people who can read/write can do it. Certain people are more willing to fill them out. (Unrepresentative sample)
