Q

properties of aldehyde

A
  • polar and reactive
  • cannot form hydrogen bonds among themselves therefore has low boiling point
  • water molecules can form hydrogen bond with oxygen atom of aldehydes so they are more soluble in water than alkanes but not as soluble as alcohols and amines

Q

properties of ketone

A
  • polar and less reactive than aldehyde thus ketones are popular solvents for polar substances ex. waxes, plastics, paints.
  • cannot form hydrogen bonds with each other but can form hydrogen bond with water
  • ketones are somewhat soluble in water

*acetone is completely miscible with water

16
Q

simplest form of carboxylic acid and its uses

A

methanoic acid (formic acid)
HCOOH
*produced by insects as a defense mechanism

17
Q

properties of carboxylic acids

A
  • polar and reactive
  • ionizes in water to form acidic solutions
(turns litmus paper red and have sour taste)
  • soluble in water
18
Q

the relation between the solubility and number of carboxyl group

A

carboxylic acids with two or more carboxyl group are more soluble in water and more acidic than acids with only one carboxyl group

19
Q

condensation equation

A

RCOOH + R’OH –> RCOOR’ + H2O

20
Q

what is formaldehyde (methanal) ised for?

A

preservation
- they reacted it with urea to manufacture a type of grease resistant, hard plastic, appliance

21
Q

what aldehydes gives almonds their natural flavor?

A

benzaldehyde - salicylaldehyde
