L2 Alkanes Flashcards
what is alkanes?
saturated hydrocarbon that have at least single bond between carbons
what is the smallest member of alkanes?
methane CH4
what does -ane suffix mean?
that it has a single bond
ethane has how many carbons?
2 carbons
what do we call a compound containing six carbons?
hexane
how many carbons does pentane have?
5 carbons
how many carbons does octane, decane, butane have?
octane - 8 carbons
decane - 10 carbons
butane - 4 carbons
how many carbons does nonane and heptane has?
nonane - 9 carbons
heptane - 7 corbons
a compound that has 1 - carbon and and 3 - carbons :
methane - 1 carbon
propane - 3 carbons
what is the formula of alkanes?
CnH2n+2
what is the repeating unit in alkanes series?
CH2
what is cycloalkanes?
cyclic hydrocarbons (hydrocarbon ring) that contains at least one single bond
what are the physical properties of alkanes?
1- nonpolar
2- low boiling and melting point
3- immiscible with water
chemical properties of alkanes and why?
low reactivity - because alkanes are nonpolar thus have no charge so they have little attraction to ions and because the C-C , C-H bonds are strong
why alkanes has low melting and boiling point?
because of the weak intermolecular attraction between alkanes molecules
why are alkanes immiscible with water?
because attraction between alkanes molecules are stronger than the attraction between alkanes and water molecules
what is the structural formula of Methyl?
CH3-
what is the structural formula of Propyl?
CH3CH2CH2-
what is the structural formula of Ethyl?
CH3CH2-
what is the structural formula of isopropyl?
CH3CHCH3
I
what is the structural formula of Butyl?
CH3CH2CH2CH2-
