L24: Data Acquisition 2 Flashcards
What is the general format for constructing a questionnaire?
- introductory statement
- demographic qns
- factual qns
- opinion qns
- closing statement, return instructions
What can a low response rate lead to?
Low response rate -> non-response bias (respondents may differ from non respondents in their characteristics and answers may be differ) -> compromises internal validity and weakens external validity (generalizability)
What administration method should be avoided when assessing knowledge?
Mail or email survey mode (bc can cheat)
How do we calculate sample size for survey sampling?
Cochran formula:
Z = z score of normal distribution (Z = 1.96 at 95% CI)
p = proportion of attribute (if unknown, p=0.5)
q = 1-p
e = desired level of precision
Yamane's formula: Assuming 95% CI and p=0.5, n = sample size N = population size e = desired level of precision
What are the random sampling methods?
- simple random sampling
- systematic random sampling
- stratified random sampling
- cluster sampling
What are non-random sampling methods?
- convenience sampling
- quota sampling
- snow ball sampling
What are some common secondary data sources?
- medical records
- registry data
What are the strengths of medical records?
- clinical data
- data is already collected
- detailed info on prescriptions
What are some limitations of medical records?
- dont know actual drug use and compliance
- non prescription drugs missed
- incomplete info on habits, past history
What are some strengths of registry data?
- inexpensive as alr created for other purpose
- detailed and systematically collected clinical data
What are some limitations of registry data?
- minimal info on drug use
- no appropriate control groups
