L14: VY Lect 1 Flashcards
Why should pharmacists bother learning research methods?
Health professionals, including pharmacists should be trained to serve patients, not drug companies.
What is hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a statement describing an idea or proposition that can be tested by observations or experiments, about an observation or phenomenon.
What are the general steps of scientific research?
- formulation of topic
- gathering information and resources
- form hypothesis
- perform experiments and collect data
- analyse data
- draw conclusions which serve as starting point for new hypothesis (hypothesis refinement)
- publish results
- retesting (frequently done by other scientists)
Are all scientific work hypothesis driven?
No, not all are hypothesis driven
What is the scientific method?
Methods for the collection of unbiased and robust data through observation and experimentation, formulation and testing of hypotheses.
What is very important in scientific experimentation?
Controls bc beliefs can alter observations. Human bias can lead persons with certain belief to see things as a way to reinforce their belief.
Are the categories of biomedical research separate?
No, it is a continuum. Progression of research can occur in either direction.
In what organisms do we investigate basic science?
Simpler biological systems such as bacteria, yeast, C elegans (worm), fly, zebra fish and mouse.
What can basic science research help to do?
Gain crucial insights on key concepts applicable to multiple biological systems, esp humans.
What does it take to become a scientist?
hardware: impt concepts and methodologies learnt in school
software: imagination and creativity
