What are the 3 main types of vegetarians?
Lacto
Lacto-ovo
Vegans
What does lacto mean?
Does eat dairy products eg. Milk, butter, cream, cheese, yoghurt
What does lacto ovo mean?
Does eat milk and eggs (similar to lacto vegetarians)
What are vegans?
Strict vegetarians
Does not eat animal food but all food is plant based
How do vegans stay healthy?
Should use plant proteins to get full range of essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals
What is coeliac disease?
Sensitivity to gluten
What is gluten?
A protein found in wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats
How does coeliac disease work ?
The body reacts to gluten by attacking the healthy tissue in the body by mistake
What does coeliac disease do?
Damages the lining of the intestines which can stop nutrients being absorbed
Causes a lot of damage
What is gluten? (Allergens)
One of the 14 food allergens and must be labelled by law
What is lactose ?
Lactose is the sugar in milk and dairy products
What is lactose intolerance?
People who suffer lack the enzyme lactase needed to break down and digest lactose
How do you protect yourself from lactose?
Buying lactose tablets to eat before consuming milk or dairy
Symptoms of lactose intolerance
Bloated stomach
Stomach pains
Diarrhoea
Heart burn
