What is inclusive leadership?
set of leader behaviours focused on facilitating group members feeling part of the group & retaining their sense of indivduality while contributing to group processes & outcomes
- value uniqueness (by enchancing diverse contributions, helping group members fully contribute)
- facilitaties belongingess (by supporting group members, ensuring justice & equity, shared decision making)
What are the 2 complementary dimensions & 6 core behaviours of inclusive leadership?
- lead outward: accountability, ownership, allyship
- lead inward: curiosity, humility, courage
What is meant by leading outward?
what u do to ensure team members are treated fairly, empowered, and able to flourish
What is meant by leading inward?
requires a hard look at who you are & your inner ability to act courageously, learn, and self reflect
What are the challenges of inclusive leadership?
- u need BOTH uniqueness & belongingness - just one backfires
- balance of unqiuess w some level of sharedness (u want a degree of uniform understanding)
- inclusive leadership might be seen as less agentic -> backlash for men? ou justement for non white & female leaders?
What are the consequences of inclusive leadership?
- increases perceived organizational support
- increases employee innovative behaviour
- increases psych safety
How can leaders develop inclusive leadership behaviours?
- use whole organization as support system:
- inclusive culture
- requires opportunity for safe learning
- requires inclusion of leaders & followers
- use of assignments, job rotation, job sharing, aciton learning, skills training
what are the downsides of being an inclusive leader?
- backlash for women & non whtie individuals (thsi behaviour is not agentic so these groups REALLy do not fit leadership stereotype) -> feeds into incompetence stereotype & subsequently lower performance ratings
-AKA burden on the minority, low status group members
so need to involve high status majority members in diversity management
