L11 - Ultradian and Infradian Rhythms Flashcards
Examples of ultradian rhythms
Five sleep stages
Basic Rest Activity Cycle
5 sleep stages consist of
NREM (1-4)
R.E.M. (5)
EEGs show what about sleep?
Brainwaves, breathing and heart rates slow
5th stage EEG similar to awake person
What happens during deep sleep?
Heart/breathing rate decrease
Brain waves slow down
EEG during REM resembles what?
EEG resembles that of an awake person
Describe the BRAC
90 min BRAC cycle occurs during sleep and wakefulness
How do we progress through the BRAC?
Move from state of alertness to physiological fatigue
What happens during end of BRAC?
Run out of resources
Lose concentration
Increased fatigue and hunger
Example of infradian cycle?
Menstrual cycle
Length of menstrual cycle?
23-36 days
When does oestrogen rise?
Reaches peak halfway through cycle, so ovulation occurs
What happens after ovulation?
Progesterone levels rise
+ related to violinists
Studied elite violinist group and found they limited practised for 90 mins at a time
Napped to recover
Better violinists napped more frequently
Less fatigued, more resources improves performance
+ related to female preferences
Usually prefer feminised faces for LT relationship
Preferred masculine during ovulation
Affects behaviour so is important
- related to pheromones
Sweat from one group of women was rubbed onto upper lip of another group
Menstrual cycle became synchronised
Not just infradian rhythms
