L1 - Nervous System Flashcards
Describe the CNS
Brain and spinal cord
Controls behaviour and regulates physiological processes
How is the brain divided
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Diencephalon
Brain stem
Describe cerebrum
4 lobes, 2 hemispheres, largest part
Describe cerebellum
Controls motor skills, balance, coordinating muscles
Describe diencephalon
Contains thalamus (sleep, alertness) and hypothalamus (homeostasis, stress response, osmoregulation)
Describe brain stem
Regulates heart and breathing rate
Function of spinal cord
Relays info between brain and rest of body by connecting specific muscles and glands by pairs of spinal nerves
Describe peripheral nervous system
Transmits APs to and from CNS using sensory and motor neurons
2 divisions
Describe SNS
Voluntary motor movements Under conscious control Sensory and motor neurons Connected to skeletal muscle ACh
Describe ANS
Only motor neurons
Involuntary
Subconscious control
SNS and ANS controlled by what
Motor cortex
Brain stem
Sympathetic NS is activated when
Under stress/threat
F/F response
Noradrenaline/adrenaline
PNS occurs when
Relaxing and conserving energy
ACh
