L11 - Lipids Flashcards
Lipids
Diverse group of naturally occurring molecules that are soluble in non-polar organic solvents
What are Fatty Acids?
Simple lipids that are building blocks for complex lipids
Fatty Acids as a source of Energy:
Heart and Skeletal muscles prefer to glucose
Lots of ATP when oxidised
Amphipathic
Two different chemical characteristics
Variation in Chain length
Usually even numbers of Carbons
Types of saturation
Saturated
Monounsaturated
Polyunsaturated
Saturated Nomenclature
-Anoic
Unsaturated Nomenclature
-Enoic, -Dienoic, -Trienoic…
Essential Fatty Acids
Unsaturated fatty acids that animals cannot synthesise but needed to synthesise others
Why can animals not synthesise EFAs
Do not have the enzyme to insert double bonds after Carbon 9
Symptoms of EFA deficiency
Skin conditions e.g. eczema
Supplements for EFA
Omega-3 and Omega-6
Plants
Fish oils
Complex Lipids
Neutral Lipids
Polar Lipids
Tryglycerides
Triesters of glycerol
Efficient store, major source of biochemical energy
Vegetable oils vs Animal fats
Vegetable oils mostly unsaturated
Animal fats more saturation
