**L1 - Memory Flashcards
What is cognitive psychology?
Cognitive psychology is concerned with PEOPLES THOUGHT PROCESSES and how these AFFECT THE WAY IN WHICH THEY BEHAVE
what is memory?
Memory is the PROCESS OF RETAINING LEARNED INFORMATION, and ACCESSING THIS INFORMATION WHEN IT IS NEEDED.
Memory is an important factor in how human beings PROCESS INFORMATION
what are the three processes involved in memory?
1) coding
2) storage
3) retrieval
What is coding?
Coding is the way that information is CHANGED so that it CAN BE STORED IN MEMORY
what is storage?
Storage is about keeping the information WITHIN THE MEMORY SYSTEM until it’s needed
what is RETRIEVAL?
Retrieval is about RECOVERING INFORMATION STORED IN THE MEMORY when it is needed
what are the three different memory stores?
1) SENSORY REGISTER/MEMORY
2) SHORT TERM MEMORY
3) LONG TERM MEMORY
what is the sensory register?
The sensory register contains UNPROCESSED IMPRESSIONS OF INFORMATION RECEIVED THROUGH THE SENSES.
It has a SEPARATE SENSORY STORE FOR EACH SENSORY INPUT:
E.g there is an ICONIC STORE for VISUAL INFORMATION and the ECHOIC STORE for AUDITORY INFORMATION
what is STM?
Short term memory (STM) is a TEMPORARY STORE for INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM THE sensory register
what is LTM?
long term memory (LTM) is a PERMANENT STORE HOLDING LIMITLESS AMOUNTS OF INFORMATION for LONG PERIODS OF TIME, POTENTIALLY A LIFETIME
how do the stores differ?
STM differs from LTM in terms of CODING, CAPACITY, DURATION and how the INFORMATION IS LOST
what is capacity?
Capacity is the AMOUNT OF INFORMATION that can be HELD IN MEMORY BEFORE NEW INFORMATION DISPLACES IT.
what is duration?
Duration is the amount of time information can be HELD IN A MEMORY STORE BEFORE ITS LOST DUE TO DECAY.
This means the information fades away from our memory
