What are the three stages
Gender identity
Gender stability
Gender constancy
A01 suggests..
That gender identity grows with age- process through 3 stages that are gradual
Gender identity
2-3.5 years label gender but only on appearence- change not consistent
Gender constancy
6 years gender is constant across time and situations, start showing gender app behaviours
Gender stability
4 years- gender is consistent over time but not for other factors, appearence a factor
What happens after they understand constancy
Seek role models and immitations
Research
Slaby and Frey and Bussey and Bandura
Slaby and Fray pp
2-5 year olds
Slaby and Fray procedure
Asked series of questions to examine which stage, indictate a low or high consistency. Shown a film 2 adults carried out stereotypical activity, use split screen measure how many times looked at each role model
Findings Slaby and Frey
higher constancy group morre time watching same sex model- boy looked at males more
Bussey and Bandura findings
Found children reported feeling good about playing with gender appropriate toys and bad about un appropriate toys
A03
Research upport slaby and frey
Methodological limitations- used a qairee to asses type- may have understanding of gender roles but unknowing how to express them.
Undermining research from B and B found happens earlier than 7 but at 4 years old
