Presented in Flinders Lane Gallery, ‘Stories behind Precious Objects’ was an exhibition that ran from February - March 2023.
Artist 1 - Julie Davidson
One prominent artist featured in this exhibition was Julie Davidson, who presented her oil painting ‘I Have Been Here Before (2022).’
The work was displayed hung on pure white walls, drawing the viewer’s attention to the work as a focal point.
Showcasing the work under a cool-toned, fluorescent LED lighting of 600 lumens created a striking and compelling feel to the space, whilst improving visual clarity for the viewer.
FLG - conservation and promotion
Because FLG is a commercial gallery, solely focused on selling works, less emphasis is placed on conservational considerations, due to works (such as Davidson’s) only being held for a short amount of time.
The space only contains one split heating and cooling system, altered for the comfort of the viewer.
In conjunction with Davidson, the presentation of the exhibition was curated by Director Claire Harris, who may have promoted the gallery space through Art Magazines eg. Art Almanac, as well as mailing lists to increase exposure of the artwork to clients.
Artist 2 - Winnie Soon
Contrastingly, the Australian Contemporary Centre for Art (ACCA), held its exhibition ‘Data Relations’ from December - March 2023. One influential work featured was Winnie Soon’s ‘Unerasable Characters II,’ presented as a digital software installation.
Similar to Flinders Lane, the artwork was displayed against vivid white walls, emphasising the harsh colour contrast between the darkness of the room and the illuminated Chinese characters.
ACCA - conservation
However, unlike FLG, who’s artworks have a higher turnover rate, ACCA must consider a greater range of conservation methods to preserve works for the general public.
As a result, tungsten bulbs are used rather than fluorescent lighting, preventing UV damage to works, while temperature is regularly monitored at around 20 degrees Celsius to prevent deterioration/mold formation on artworks.
ACCA - promotion
As a custodian of the general public, ACCA would promote works such as Soon’s through digital advertising and billboards or posters, as well as more mainstream media eg. The Age.
Promotion of works in public galleries like ACCA are often designed to target a greater audience due to increased levels of government funding and a higher budget, compared to commercial galleries such as FLG.
