Curation and presentation Flashcards
Explain an intention of a curator in one gallery space you visited and how the type of space informed the presentation
OS
The Australian contemporary Centre of the Arts (ACCA) presented their exhibition ‘Data Relations’ in a modern yet simplistic gallery space.
Curatorial intention
The intention of the curator, Miriam Kelly, was to bring together artist led projects which wrestled with the challenges faced in a contemporary, data-driven society.
Inspired by the European kunsthalle, architect Wood Marsh built built an exhibition hall specifically for exhibiting contemporary works.
Rather than having two entry points, one was blocked to create a central route to view all works.
Entry into gallery space
Upon entry of gallery space 1, a sterile, surgical almost futuristic scene creates an ambiguous atmosphere for the rest of the works.
Winnie Soon
The second work, situated at the end of the exhibition space was Winnie Soon’s ‘Unerasable Characters II’
The large scale installation was projected over 8m of the end wall, encompassing the viewer in an intimidating darkness of the gallery space.
The darkness of the gallery space, contrasted by the illuminated characters and symbols further reinforced the curatorial intentions of depicting the consequences of censorship, implemented through technological platforms and infrastructure.
Mimi Onuoha
This was amplified by Mimi Onuoha’s installation ‘The Cloth in the Cable,’ situated in gallery space 2.
Through a twisted body of cables, sprinkled with traditional Nigerian spices such as cinnamon, a fragrant aroma was released into the exhibition space, further connoting to Onuoha’s idea of data affecting cultures all around the world.

Additionally, the vibrant wall colour in Dulux-Temptress created a profound sense of openness, intensifying the curator’s hypothetical vision of the impacts of data on a more global scale.
