Conservation - storage and transportation Flashcards
Storage/transport procedures for different art forms
- Paintings = metal racks and steel cases
- Sculptures and ceramics
= shelving/cabinets/specialized vaults - Works on paper = Solander Boxes /Mounting artworks in acid-free mount board and wrapping them in acid-free tissue paper
Transportation - Handling Artworks
People handling works must use cotton or powder-free nitrile gloves so that oils and acids from hands do not damage the surface of the work.
Fingerprints may not show up immediately (it may take several years to etch the surface), however, once the fingerprints are there, they cannot be removed. Cotton gloves can be slippery so nitrile gloves are used more often.
*Synthetic gloves are used when handling glass, china, or smooth polished objects (cotton is too slippery)
*No jewellery to be worn when transporting (scratching or snagging can occur)
*Cleanliness is important (washing hands\
Think ahead (remove obstacles, clear passages, open doors)
