Brief intro

A

Manifestation of Time explores the ways in which time passes through all individuals, from the ethereality that encompasses the experience of time, to the fluid and ungraspable nature of time.

Degas - Giovanna Bellelli

A

Situated in a long, rectangular, contemporary gallery space, Edgar Degas’ ‘Portrait of Giovanna Belleli’ was fixed on a pure white wall, highlighting the tonal contrast within the work as well as the faded, tea-stained paper, reflecting time’s fleeting and fluid nature. The presentation of the work involved hanging it at eye level, strategically enhancing viewer engagement.

Degas - presentation 2

A

Complementary to this, the didactic information was thoughtfully situated on one side of the drawing, printed on foam core the same colour as the wall to eliminate potential diversions from the work. A gentle, diffused lighting enveloped the piece, ensuring a harmonious and even dispersion of light.

Drury - Shimanto River Spheres

A

The second work selected from the proposed exhibition was ‘Shimanto River spheres’ by Chris Drury. Through the use of river stones and fallen bamboo branches, Drury intensifies the connection between time and the cyclical patterns of nature by placing the installation in the center of the gallery space.

A

Through this, as well as the lack of open seating, viewers were able to efficiently flow into the gallery space whilst observing the work from all angles, creating a greater sense of intimacy between the viewer and the work.

Ah Kee - George Sibley

A

The last work, which was Vernon Ah Kee’s ‘George Sibley,’ was positioned in the proposed space on the main sightline, due to being the largest work. As the central work within the exhibition, the portrait was hung on the free-standing modular wall in the middle of the space and did not require a wall colour backdrop.

Rather, it was also displayed on a pure white wall to emphasise the monochrome colour palette within the work whilst drawing the viewer’s eyes to the drawing as a focal point, allowing them to contemplate the sadness associated with the transience of time.
