He had his limits and would not let in dishonest Christians such as thieves. The routines and expectations laid down in 1597 by him have a clear emphasis on improvemnts of behaviour so no gambling and playing cards.

13 inhabitants Participate in group worship at St Martin’s in morning and evening on sundays, wednesdays, fridays and holy days. If they did not attend they would be fined 6d per session missed.

A

William Lambarde founded an almshouse and his example was followed by Lord Cobham and Archbishop hop Whitgift. These three then worked together in 1592 as the first governors of Sir John Hawkins almshouse in Catham for disabled sailors.

A

Protestants did not believe in buying ones way into heaven so they were now founded to show ones faith in god as undertaking charitable work was godly. They were now established in the founders lifetime and though praying was important, there was an emphasis on improving the behaviour of the poor.
