A
- English sailors like Hawkins and Drake attacked and stole treasure from Spanish ships in the New World (spain had a monopoly aroun the new world trades and england was envious)
- King Philip II was furious but Elizabeth encouraged and rewarded adventurers, famously knighting Francis Drake
- In 1577, Drake was secretly commissioned by Elizabeth I to set off on an expedition against the Spanish colonies on the American Pacific coast. He ended up circumnavigating the globe by 1578
