Q

What are some potential complications with alignment for Lizard Posture?

A

Tightness in the hips may not allow the practicioner to lower the elbows to the foor.

Weakness in the quads may cause the back knee to fatigue quickly and buckle. Students may place the back knee on the ground for a more passive hip opener.

Q

What are some potential complications with alignment?

A

Tight lats may create the “Downward Facing Bulldog”

Lack of abdominal engagement may lead to an exaggerated curve of the low back.

Depending on the style of downward facing dog (Dharma Dog, Head to Floor, ect.) students may have potential shoulder concerns due to impingment interval.

Tight hamstrings and/or adductor magnus may pull the pelvis into a posterior tilt causing rounding in the back and/or an inability to straighten the legs.

Q

What are some potential complications with alignment for Child’s Pose?

A

Tightness in ankles may create discomfort or cramping in the bottoms of the feet; tightness in the quads or excessive soft tissue compression may prevent the hips from setting towards the heels; Pregnancy or belly fat may not allow the belly to move towards the thighs; the head may not rest on the floor due to prior complications.

34
Q

What is Dandasana?

A

Staff Pose

35
Q

What are some potential complications with alignment for Staff Pose?

A

Students with tight hamstring or a hypertonic adductor magnus may have difficulty straightening the legs while sitting up straight. If the tightness is in the adductor magnus bending the knees may exacerbate the issue, while if the problem is located more in the hamstrings bending the knees may ease the pull on the low back. Arm length to torso proportions may shift the hand placement to avoid excessive elevation or depression of the shoulder blades.

49
Q

What are some potential complications with alignment for Head to Knee Pose?

A

Students with tight hamstrings or a hypertonic adductor magnus may have difficulty straightening the legs while sitting up straight. If the tightness is in the adductor magnus bending the knees may exacerbate the issue, while if the problem is located more in the hamstrings bending the knees may exacerbate the issue, while if the problem is located more in the hamstrings bending the knees may ease the pull on the low back. Tightness in the hip may prevent the bent knee from resting on the ground.

56
Q

What is Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana?

A

Variation Pigeon Pose

57
Q

What are the potential complications of alignment?

A

Students with tight hips should not try to move the shin to far forward. Complications in the knees can arise when students pursue an aggressive stance in this pose. This posture is assymetrical for the hips with weight bearing. It can also create complications in the SI joints if the front shin is too far forward.

Students should be mindful of the back foot. The tendency is to sickle (invert) the ankle which can overstretch the ligaments at the front/lateral side of the ankle creating a weakness in the ankle joint.

62
Q

What is Sukhasana?

A

Easy cross legged seat

63
Q

What are some potential complications with easy cross legged seat?

A

Tightness in the hips, low back, and thighs can all contribute to an uncomfortable seat and limit the ability of a student to sit upright. When the student is trying hard to sit up the hip flexors will be more engaged and add to the fatigue of “trying” to sit. Elevating the pelvis so that the hip ASIS (top of hip crest) is higher than the knees will allow the pelvis to find its anterior tilt so that the spine can be neutral.

69
Q

What is Siddhasana?

A

Adept’s Pose

70
Q

What are some potentional complications with Adept’s Pose?

A

This posture requires very open hips (the ability to externally rotate the femur in the hip socket). Students should be able to sit comfortably on the floor with the thighs and knees relaxed to the earth before attempting this posture. Even students who are very open in the hips will benefit greatly by using a blanket or block to slightly elevate the hips and add ease to th low back.

75
Q

What is Padmasana?

A

Lotus Pose

76
Q

What are some potential complications for alignment with Lotus Pose?

A

This is an extremely advanced pose for students with full range of external rotation at the hip joint. Attempting this posture prematurely can cause signifigant damage to the knees and ankles. Eversion of the foot at the ankle joint is crucial to protecting the ankle and knee joints from weight bearing strain.

The tendency is for many students to go soft in the ankle causing a sickle effect which will strain the anterior talofibular ligament and a pulling force on the later side of the knee.

Another tendency is for students to try to yank the ankle up on top of the thigh placing an extreme tork force on the knee joint.
