This is an inflammation of the plantar fascia usually resulting in pain at the heel. The pain is usually more severe in the morning or when you first get up and put pressure on the foot or when there is prolonged standing or walking on the foot. The condition often occurs in runners (or other athletes who run a great deal) and in cases of rapid weight gain.

Because it crosses the knee joint tightness in the muscles attatching to it can cause it to pull resulting in mal-tracking of the patella or a rubbing of the IT band against the head of the fibula.

A

Spread your fingers while performing moves, prop your palms to reduce the angle between the forearm and the wrists. This will take pressure off the wrists. Make fists instead of putting palms flat, like in table top position. Rest on your forearm in certain poses rather than your hand.

Poses that puts strong flexion or pressure on the knees, such as childs pose, eagle pose, dancers pose, , or lotus pose. Modify by loosening the flexion of the knee, such as putting a blanket between the calves and buttocks in childs pose or sitting loosely crosslegged in lotus pose. Some poses that help the knees are chair pose, downward dog, and mountain pose.

What is contraindicated for a person with IT band friction syndrome and what helps to alleviate it.

A

Foam rolling can be painful and can further agitate IT band friction. It is better to use ball therapy to roll out your gluteus maximus and tensor fasciae latae. Then roll the balls on the outside of your thigh. Use a plow motion, by rolling the balls in a super slow motion. Wide legged forward bend, side plank, and side reclining leg lift can help loosen tight IT bands.

How do you use yoga for arthritus?

A

Iyengar, Hatha, and Restorative yoga are very benificial for arthritus patients. Bikram, Vinyasa, and Power yoga do not allow time for transition or to alter poses for the wrists and ankles leading to pain or injury. Modifications can be to do vinyasa yoga with a chair. Yin yoga also can too much pressure on the joints and should be avoided with arthritus.
