Knee joint SDL Flashcards
What are the three articulations in the knee joint?
Medial femerotibial
Lateral femerotibial
Femeropatellar
In what way is the pull of vastus medialis different to the rest of the quadriceps? Why?
much more oblique angle to prevent the patella being pulled too far laterally, in combination with the bony ridge on the lateral femoral condyle it prevents dislocation
Where does the ACL attach?
anterior intercondylar region of the tibia
(Travels supero-anteriorly)
to the medial femoral condyle
What is the function of the ACL
Prevents anterior displacement of the tibia on the femur and prevents hyperextension
Where does the PCL attach?
Posterior intercondylar region of the tibia
(travels superoposteriorly)
To the lateral femoral condyle
What is the function of the PCL
Prevents posterior displacement of the tibia on the femur, prevents hyperflexion, stabiliser of flexed knee when weight bearing.
What is often injured at the same time as the MCL and why?
medial meniscus as they are attached
What movements are possible at the knee joint?
Flexion and rotation
