Anterior compartment of thigh Flashcards
From where does the great saphenous vein arise?
Femoral vein
From where does the short saphenous vein arise?
Popliteal vein
Why is the femoral triangle important clinically?
Vascular access
Femoral hernia
Vascular surgery
Lymphatic spread of disease
What are the borders of the femoral triangle?
Inguinal ligament superiorly
Adductor longus medially
Sartorius laterally
Floor- pectineus and adductor longus medially, iliopsoas laterally
Roof- fascia lata, cribiform fascia at the saphenous opening
What are the contents of the femoral triangle?
- Femoral nerve
- Femoral artery
- Femoral vein
- Femoral canal (lymph)
- Empty space (allows distension)
1-4 are in the femoral sheath
What muscles have their motor supply from the femoral nerve?
Knee extensors (quadriceps femoris, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius) Hip flexors (pectineus, iliacus, sartorius)
Where does the femoral nerve deliver sensory supply?
Cutaneous to the anteromedial thigh
Terminal cutaneous branch to the medial leg and foot (saphenous nerve)
What are the attachments of sartorius?
ASIS to medial tibia, just inferomedial to tibial tuberosity
Innervation of sartorius
Femoral nerve (L2, L3)
Action of sartorius?
Flexes thigh at hip
Flexes leg at knee
What are the boundaries of the adductor canal?
Anterior- sartorius
Lateral- vastus medialis
Medioposterior- adductor longus (and adductor magnus)
What are the quadriceps?
Rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius
What are the attachments, action and innervation of rectus femoris?
Straight head: ASIS to quadriceps femoris tendon
Reflected head: ilium just sup. to acetabulum to quadriceps femoris tendon
Action: flexes thigh at hip and extends leg at knee
Innervation: Femoral nerve
What are the attachments, action and innervation of vastus lateralis?
Femur (lateral intertrochanteric line, margin greater trochanter, lateral margin gluteal tubercle, lateral lip linea aspera) to quadriceps femoris tendon and lateral margin of patella.
Action: extends leg at knee
Innervation: femoral nerve
What are the attachments, action and innervation of vastus medialis?
Femur (medial intertrochanteric line, pectineal line, medial lip linea aspera, medial supracondylar line) to quad. fem. tendon and medial patella
Action: extends leg at knee
Innervation: femoral nerve
