KK2 - States - The impact on state sovereignty of: Regional Groupings, Contested borders, Issues that require multilateral resolution Flashcards
Sovereignty
Legitimate or widely recognised ability to exercise effective control of a territory within recognised borders. This is the primary organising principle of global politics, providing states with the authority to represent the territorial entity within the international community. State sovereignty can be challenged internally (for example, secessionist groups) or externally (for example, one state invades another)
Regional Groupings
A collective of states in a particular region that combine their efforts to achieve certain economic, social and political goals and objectives
Regional Grouping: European Union
-Founded as the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1957
-Aim = to remove trade barriers and form a common market
-Now, it governs common economic, political, social and security policies of its member states
Contested borders
Contested means “in dispute”. Depending on a series of circumstances, borders can be contested and claimed, create conflict and/or cause change.
A Border represents the land or sea boundary between two or more states. If this is in dispute, the sovereignty (territorial integrity) can be challenged
Multilateral Resolutions
Coordinating relations between three or more global actors to create, ratify and abide by international laws, conventions and treaties to solve a problem or a continuous matter
Note: No single state is able to unilaterally solve such issues.
