MINUSMA meaning
UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali
Origin of MINUSMA
April 2013: The UN Security Resolution unanimously establishes the MINUSMA peace peeking mission through Resolution 2100 (2013) as an uprising in northern Mali by armed groups linked to al-Qaeda spiralled out of control.
Termination of MINUSMA
June 2023: Mail successfully lobbied the UN security council to not renew MINUSMA’s mandate.
December 2023: MINUSMA closes its official headquarters in Mali
Termination - quote
-MINUSMA “has certainly not achieved its fundamental goal of supporting the efforts of the government in securing the country”, Issa Konfourou, Mali’s ambassador to the UN
Mali’s influence over the UN
-Mali claimed the United Nations’ peace keeping mission failed to bring peace, and asked them to withdraw “without delay”.
-Mali have now turned to groups like Wagner (cheaper, less regulations etc) to help maintain peace and control.
-This is an example of the state of Mali exercising their political power
Political Power
Refers to the use of a state’s internal political machinery to exert influence over the actions of others
