Kingdom Protista II Flashcards
Euglenoids
Are unicellular organisms with characteristics of both plants and animals. They are typically found in freshwater environments and possess a flagellum for locomotion.
Diatoms
Are unicellular algae with intricate silica cell walls called frustules. They are found in both marine and freshwater environments and are important primary producers. They reproduce asexually.
Dinoflagellates
Are unicellular organisms with two flagella. They are common in marine environments, including oceans and coral reefs. Some species are photosynthetic, while other are heterotrophic. Certain dinoflagellates are responsible for harmful alga blooms (red tides) and produce toxins harmful to marine life and humans.
Red algae
Are multicellular algae with red pigments (phycoerythrin) that mask chlorophyll. Are predominantly marine, but some species can be found in freshwater environments.
Brown algae
Are multicellular algae with brown pigments (fucoxanthin) that give them their characteristic color. Are primarily marine organisms found in colder waters. Include large seaweeds such as kelps.
Green algae
Are a diverse group of algae with chlorophyll a and b, similar to land plants. Are found in freshwater, marine, and terrestrial habitats and include unicellular, colonial, and multicellular forms.
