Kingdom Protista I Flashcards
Protists are _____ organisms that are not plants, animals, or fungi.
Eukaryotic
Are protists unicellular?
Protists are mostly unicellular, although some species are colonial or multicellular.
Amoebas
Unicellular protists characterized by their amoeboid movement using pseudopodia. They feed on bacteria and other small organisms through phagocytosis.
Ciliates
Protists with cilia used for locomotion and feeding. They have complex cell structures and often possess two nuclei: a macro nucleus and a micro nucleus .
Trypanosomes
Parasitic protists that cause diseases such as African sleeping sickness and Changas disease. They have a distinctive kinetoplast, a mass of mitochondrial DNA.
Plasmodia
Multinucleate, amoeboid protists that form a multinucleate mass called a plasmodium. Some species are parasitic, while other are free-living and play ecological roles in nutrient cylcling.
