Gymnosperms and Angiosperms Flashcards
Vascular plants with naked seeds:
Gymnosperms
Phylum Gingkophyta: Ginkgo
Gingko bologna is the only living species in this phylum. Is a deciduous tree with fan-shaped leaves. Is dioecious, with separate male and female trees. Seeds are produced on the female trees and are not enclosed in a fruit.
Phylum cycadophyta include:
Cycads and zamias
Phylum Cycadophyta - Cycads and Zamias
Cycads are ancient plants resembling palm trees. They are often found in tropical and subtropical regions and have large, compound leaves and produce cones for reproduction. Zamias are similar but are more primitive and often grown in arid environments.
Phylum Gnetophyta - Gnetophytes include three genera:
Gnetum
Ephedra
Welwitschia
Phylum Gnetophyta - Gnetophytes
Are morphologically diverse groups with some species resembling angiosperms. They are found in a variety of habitats and typically produce cones or seeds.
Phylum Coniferophyta - Conifers
Are the largest and most familiar group of gymnosperms. They include pines, spruces, firs, cedars, and redwoods. Are characterized by needle-like or scale-like leaves and cones for reproduction.
Vascular plants with flowers:
Angiosperms
Phylum Anthophyta or Magnoliophyta
Are angiosperms. The flowers are reproductive structures for sexual reproduction; are made of sepals, petals, stamens (male reproductive organs), and carpels (female reproductive organs)
Angiosperms reproduction
Angiosperms exhibit double fertilization, where one sperm fertilizes the egg to form a zygote, and another sperm fuses with polar nuclei to form endosperm.
